Jean Seberg, behind the scenes of “Bonjour Tristesse”, 1958 directed by Otto Preminger.
hey so that cover art (credit Leslie Predy) is up there because i’m putting out a new record called I Am An Exit this fall. i worked on it all through 2012 and finished in January of this year. i’m really proud of it and i hope you like it.
a lot of my older stuff has kind of been about these manic, all-in aesthetic pendulum swings. and i’d like to come back to more of an emphasis on interesting production or aesthetics at some point, but for now, what i am foregrounding on this record is just myself and my songs.
that’s not to say that the production on this record doesn’t have some touchstones. i listened to a lot of industrial while i was figuring out its sounds: Einstürzende Neubauten, Downward Spiral-era Nine Inch Nails, really proximate and live-sounding early 2ks twee-ish stuff like Microphones, and a lot of the more euphoric but gritty mid-90s UK rave music: Fantazia comps, that kind of thing.
i had this vision of doing like a twee-industrial-rave thing that would be totally sui generis. but i’ve been told that at the end of the day the record probably sounds more like dark-world Backstreet Boys than any of those things. real life.
lyrically i was trying to write angsty, anthemic stuff on bodysongs, and sad, surrealistic poetry on little sleepwalker. on this one i have kind of gone all in and made an emo record. yes, that means you are in for a lot of really direct and really male self-scrutiny by your intrepid narrator. i tried to avoid the Two Pitfalls of emo, which are: 1) misogyny, whether manifest or latent, and 2) lyrics that just really make you cringe.
i’ll let you be the judge of whether i was successful.
